Kim, Jin Suk

Studio 68, Delta House Studios

Jin Suk Kim is a visual artist who lives and works in London. He was born in Iksan, an industrial town in South Korea. Jin has always been fascinated by art & design, since his early days.

Jin’s fascination with design brought him to London around 2005, to study Design Communication at Chelsea College of Art. Whilst attending the college, he was hugely inspired by the approach to design methodology which is a process-driven method to create a novel outcome. In 2008, he started pursuing a professional career in graphic design; working with artists, start-ups and design studios. However, through the interactions and exposure he realised the harsh reality that the commercial design tends to constraint his thinking relevant to his practices. There was not enough room for intensive research and being flexible with the process. Consequently (2014), this led him to delve into fine art practice; which has more tolerance for the above mentioned aspects.

While experimenting with various mediums and techniques, one of the key findings was ‘repurposing’ - i.e. reimagining a process from a completely different discipline can create an unique outcome. This was demonstrated and evidenced during 'Art 50 Pop Up Show' in Fulham 2015, whereby he created abstract patterns utilising various RC car tyre treads as a medium. During the demonstration at the show, he was able to influence the audience with the repurposing process; as it provided a thought leadership that people could debate on.

Since 2015, he has embraced doodling (using fineliner pens). He has taken 'the mindless scribbling process' to a form of art in contemporary times. His works have been introduced to the public during 'Wandsworth Open House', 'Reading Contemporary Art Fair' in 2016, Royal Academy of Art Summer Exhibition 2020, Wells Art Contemporary 2023, ING Discerning Eye 2023 and more.
