Ireland, Martin

Studio 39, Delta House Studios

Martin Ireland is a London based figurative artist. He graduated at Canterbury School of Art in 1987 in printmaking and with an MA at Camberwell school of Art in 1989. His first solo exhibition was during his degree show at the St Judes Gallery in June 1987. Since then he has held exhibitions widely across the UK and Geneva.

Painting is a way of processing the madness we absorb every day and resolving order from chaos. I explore my own emotions to experiences presented to me by people I meet. Recently, I have focussed on why people migrate from their country of origin and the effects that a trauma, disaster or prejudice imposes on individuals.

My paintings take us into spaces of personal intimacy and sensitivity of the masculine figurative experience. The male figure can tell a story more intensely than a portrait and often broadens narrative. My work open up a dialogue and explores isolation, loneliness and rejection. Media images etch themselves into visual memory and unravel in an ongoing and developing body of work.
