Pedro Sousa Louro

Born in Africa, the family is originally from Portugal, with a high aristocratic background from Braga in northern Portugal.
In the early 1970s, the Family moved back to Portugal from Angola to Estoril, Cascais, close to Lisbon.
Pedro went to Madrid in 1989 to work as a model and study. After that, he came to the UK, where he lives. He graduated from Chelsea College of Art and Design in London in 1997.
In 2011, he earned his third degree in Abstract Vision and Modern Expressionism at the University of Kensington and Chelsea.
Driven by a profound appreciation for architecture and the Neoplasticism movement, Pedro's artistic force uniquely blends these influences.
He believes that every building should reflect the public's needs and environmental considerations, not merely an economic investment.
Pedro uses diverse materials, such as reclaimed wood and oxidised metals, to blend Cubism, abstract expressionism, and architectural elements in his all-neoplastic compositions. His innovative works have been featured globally in British Vogue, House & Garden, Vanity Fair, Tatler magazine, The Wall Street Journal in the US, and other international art publications.
In 2021, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and the former Portuguese Ambassador to the UK, Manuel Lobo Antunes, honoured him for his significant contributions to the international art industry.
In 2023, we will partner with the cinema industry at 20th CENTURY STUDIOS | DISNEY USA by using Pedro's artworks in the set design of two upcoming blockbuster productions.
One of Pedro's most significant influences and inspirational artists in art and design is the Italian Architect and Designer Andrea Branzi, born in Florence. Pedro is a very personal and private friend of the Branzi family and lived with them in Milan when Pedro was a model in his younger years. The remarkable work of Andrea Branzi is featured in the highest-profile museums and galleries worldwide and has had a tremendously impactful effect on Pedro's creative vision of art.
Pedro’s work demonstrates his dialogue with the evolution of colour and geometry, despite his preferences for contemporary artists such as Francis Bacon, Ben Nicholson, and Robert Rauschenberg. His reminiscence is rooted in the "neoplasticism" of Mondrian, influenced in some ways by Picasso. Only in the early part of his career, in his more recent research and studies, does he combine Cubism and abstract expressionism in just one practice as he creates his works in a neoplasticism language statement
He uses Pollock's technique of "dropping" but with the order and sense of Rothko.
A textural tangibility is immediately evident in Pedro Sousa Louro’s work. Earthy and material-focused, an unassuming beauty is found within the play between dark woods and a muddied palette. Furthermore, geometry plays a crucial role here, as clean white lines converse with blocks of muted colour. There is an almost archival, collage-like approach to the application of materials and hues. It is as if Sousa Louro has assumed the archaeologist role, unearthing forgotten layers of history.

ARTIST STATEMENT
My artworks burst with vibrant mixed media, each piece a unique blend of elements!
Once I develop an idea and envision the final painting, the exciting adventure of sourcing materials begins!
I love working with wood panels and canvas, as well as crafted wood and canvas sheets.
Each piece is framed in a stylish mid-century design, reflecting my visual perceptions.
My compositions joyfully incorporate textiles, vintage wood objects, old journals, and rustic metal elements, all enhanced by my unique technique of oxidising copper powders for geometrical rustic old, deteriorated metal elements. I finish each artwork with a playful mix of letters and numbers that resonate with me.
I embrace the beauty of my abstract vision, balancing colours and lines to create the final compositions that satisfy my artistic spirit.
My pieces are sealed with yacht varnish, which I adore. While I may explore other options in the future, this varnish brings me joy and security with the objects incorporated as I prepare to share my work with the world. This varnish fixes the security of everything in the artwork.
I’m not interested in creating conventional beauty; I aim to challenge my perceptions and explore architectural forms, abstract geometries, and neoplastic styles. My art is a journey of imagination, using geometry to reveal new perspectives of beauty.
I have no complicated career goals or industry-demanding pressures; I have a passion for creating and obviously care about building a career!
I produce twelve to seventeen pieces each year, and while my style may not resonate with everyone, it sparks immense interest in others. Over these years, some of my pieces have become part of a few high-profile private art collections worldwide.
I thrive in the delightful uncertainty of creativity, always organised yet boundless.
